Filet 18 (Filet) is located right on Main street in Bloomsburg, Pa. While this restaurant is in a college town, it has a more mature atmosphere.
If you head in on any day of the week there is Happy Hour from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. where their 100 craft beers are just $2. However, this is a slightly confusing offer because my two roommates and I were told the number 22 beer was not included in Happy Hour.
The selection changes as the beers will rotate daily, sometimes changing due to the season. One of their latest hits is the New Belgium Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
The Food and the Service
The variety of foods Filet offers is incredible. From building your own burger or pizza, to seafood, meat and fowl.
On a Tuesday or Wednesday night customers can enjoy half price appetizers from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Lunch specials can be found on their Facebook page.
The appetizer menu is very unique, from macaroni and cheese bites to cauliflower wings. As someone who does not step outside of their comfort zone with anything food related, I had to do a lot of Google searches to figure out what several of the menu items were. I would suggest to always heavily read the description. For example, I had no idea what ‘Poutine’ or ‘Falafel Bites’ were until further research was done.
This specific Wednesday night the restaurant was empty, our server had endless amounts of time to spend with us. For a slow night, our food came out slowly and was burnt. Our second round of spinach dip came out and was not burnt, but the cheese was very overdone. Along with spinach dip we ordered cauliflower wings and calamari to share around the table. The calamari was perfectly season and breaded and the cauliflower wings were shockingly good for something I would never have chosen without the prompting of my roommates.
Right away you could tell our server was new, which wasn’t a big deal as I was in her position just over two years ago. However, we received our checks and were almost charged wrong which I was concerned about.
My roommate, her brother and I returned on the following Thursday, the place was packed and you could tell the wait staff was not prepared. We arrived at 5:00 p.m. for Happy Hour.
The drinks were brought to our table and we ordered wings. The wings were huge, tasteful, but really had very little meat.
Our server our second night was someone who really knew very little about the drink options as well as the popular menu items. She had little knowledge of the wings, which were the special that night. It was also awkward when she carded two of the three of us, even though I would say we all look about the same age.
One thing in common with every trip I’ve made to Filet is that the same bartender is almost always behind the bar. I’d say she’s probably one of the only people who are gaining returning customers.
The restaurant as a whole is absolutely beautiful. The craft beers are perfectly displayed along the back of the bar and beautiful lights are strung from the ceiling above the bar.
I would say the prices are reasonable, but not necessarily on a college budget. If you’re headed to Filet for Happy Hour or half price appetizers on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, it’s within the college budget.
The biggest thing that Filet lacks is internal promotion. If it weren’t for my roommate dating a previous bartender, I probably would not have ever ended up at Filet.
Overall I would say this restaurant would receive a seven out of ten from me. Their food is delicious and the atmosphere is ideal, but the service needs some improvement.
