On Wednesday, September 21st, the Center for Leadership and Engagement along with Colleges Against Cancer hosted a fundraiser to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The event took place in the heart of Bloomsburg University’s academic quad at the Student Services Center. Out on the patio students organized a lemonade stand and not only sold the delicious drink but also had paper lemon cutouts on sale for a $1 each to benefit the cause.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand was founded by Alex Scott in 2000. She was only four years old and battling neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer, when she decided she wanted to raise money for the doctors to be able to treat more children just like her. In 2004 Alex passed away at 8-years-old, but her legacy continues to live on through her parents Liz and Jay Scott who run the foundation in her honor.

Kimberly Oaster, an employee at the Center for Leadership and Engagement, is glad to see this event come to life at Bloomsburg University. “I have held an Alex’s Lemonade Stand with another organization in high school and it was such a rewarding experience.” Kimberly even got the opportunity to meet both Liz and Jay Scott who themselves are Pennsylvania residents. ” They were both so nice and grateful. You can tell they really appreciate everyone who volunteers their time to contribute to the cause.”

This was only one of two events the Center for Leadership and Engagement is co-sponsoring with Colleges against Cancer. “This is such a great opportunity for both our organizations to work together and for such a great cause” says Colleges against Cancer member Gabby Peruzzi. “After today we will continue to sell lemons at the CLE office, and on October 5th we will be holding another lemonade stand. We encourage all students to come out and wear yellow in support.”

Both organizations are looking forward to a great turnout on Wednesday, October 5th for their final event. The lemonade stand will be held on the Student Service Center patio from 11 A.M-2 P.M. For more information on the organization visit http://www.alexslemonade.org
